FRAUD UNIT ARRESTS TWO FOR SUSPECTED SLIP-AND-FALL INSURANCE FRAUD

On Tuesday, August 26, 1997, the Arizona Department of Insurance Fraud Unit, assisted by the Department of Public Safety and the Yuma Police Department, executed search warrants on a residence at 2147 South 11th Avenue, Yuma, Arizona and a hotel room at 1450 Castle Dome Road also in Yuma, Arizona, regarding suspected insurance fraud schemes operated in several states. Arrested during the service of the warrants were Jimmy Flippen, 26 and his mother Mary Alessi, 55.

The Fraud Unit's investigation revealed the suspects allegedly staged slip-and-fall accidents in department stores, restaurants and truck stops in many Arizona locations. The investigation further suggests that Flippen and Alessi allegedly have committed more than 50 staged slip-and-fall accidents since 1993, in at least eight states, collecting thousands of dollars from fraudulent insurance claims. The suspects allegedly have used numerous aliases and committed as many as four separate slip-and-falls in different locations, all in one day.

"If any business in Arizona believes that it has been victims of a slip-and-fall scam involving these or other suspects," says John Greene, Director of Insurance, "needs to contact the Fraud Unit at 602-912-8418."
